Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-year Argentina career.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision on Instagram, saying the loss of his father, Jorge, strengthened his belief that it was time to step away. Messi made his Argentina debut in 2005 and went on to make a record 207 appearances, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles. He also played in World Cup finals in 2014 and 2026, with the latter defeat to Spain influencing his decision.
Messi said he always gave everything for the Argentina shirt and thanked fans, teammates, coaches and his family for their support. He will continue his club career with Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until 2028.
