FC Barcelona have suffered another injury setback, with defender Xavi Espart expected to miss around seven weeks after sustaining a right ankle injury against Real Madrid in Sunday’s Clasico.
Barcelona confirmed on Monday that medical tests revealed an injury to the syndesmosis joint in Espart’s right ankle following a collision with an opposing player. The 19-year-old was forced off during the first half after a heavy challenge from Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
Espart signed a contract extension earlier this month after impressing with his performances across both full-back positions. Having made his first-team debut last season, the versatile defender has established himself as a regular member of Hansi Flick’s squad.
He also scored his first Champions League goal in Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, further strengthening his position in the team. Espart’s injury adds to Barcelona’s defensive concerns, with Eric Garcia sidelined by a muscle injury, Jules Kounde doubtful with an ankle sprain, and Andreas Christensen also unavailable.
His absence could limit Flick’s options in defence during the coming weeks.
