Mariano Navone produced one of the biggest upsets of US Open 2026 by defeating fourth seed Novak Djokovic in the opening round at Flushing Meadows.
The 25-year-old Argentine handed Djokovic his first-ever first-round defeat at the US Open, ending the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s impressive record at the tournament. Navone, who won his maiden ATP Tour title on clay at the 2026 Bucharest Open, entered the contest with a modest 12-29 career record on hard courts. Despite being more comfortable on clay, he delivered a remarkable performance against Djokovic, who was making his 20th US Open appearance.
Navone has also recorded notable victories over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud. Calling the victory a “dream come true,” Navone described beating his idol as an unbelievable moment in his career.
