Switzerland created history by reaching the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a memorable victory for Murat Yakin’s side, who will now face Argentina in the last eight. Colombia enjoyed more possession and came closest through Gustavo Puerta, whose curling effort was brilliantly saved by Gregor Kobel. Switzerland also threatened, with Fabian Rieder forcing Camilo Vargas into a comfortable save. With neither side able to find a breakthrough in 120 minutes, the tie was decided on penalties.
Kobel denied Hernandez after Sanchez hit the crossbar, before Vargas calmly converted the winning penalty to send Switzerland through.
