Switzerland Beat Colombia on Penalties to Reach First World Cup Quarter-final
Switzerland held their nerve from the penalty spot to defeat Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic shootout after 120 goalless minutes in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash, securing a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954.
In a contest where clear-cut chances were few and far between, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero by saving Juan Hernandez’s penalty in the shootout before Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive spot-kick to send Murat Yakin’s side through to a quarter-final meeting with Argentina.
The opening half offered little attacking quality as both teams struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Colombia enjoyed slightly more of the ball and carried the greater attacking threat, with Gustavo Puerta forcing Kobel into a fine save in the 21st minute after curling an effort towards the top corner. Switzerland responded through Dan Ndoye and Fabian Rieder, but Camilo Vargas was rarely troubled as the teams went into the break level.
The statistics reflected the lack of attacking incision, with Colombia generating just 0.25 expected goals (xG) compared to Switzerland’s 0.06 during the opening 45 minutes.
Switzerland returned with greater intent after the restart and almost found the breakthrough in the 48th minute when Djibril Sow dragged his effort wide after being picked out by Ndoye inside the area. Rieder then came close with a curling free-kick that rippled the side-netting, briefly fooling sections of the crowd into believing it had found the net.
Neither side could find the decisive breakthrough in normal time, although Switzerland came closest in stoppage time when Manuel Akanji’s through ball released Ndoye, whose shot flashed agonisingly across the face of goal.
Extra time produced the best opportunities of the evening. Colombia came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the 99th minute when Jhon Lucumi powered a header against the crossbar from a Juan Quintero corner before Kobel produced an excellent save to deny Jaminton Campaz’s curling effort moments later.
Switzerland responded through substitute Zeki Amdouni, whose close-range effort was well parried by Vargas, but the biggest chance of the match fell to Campaz in the 116th minute. After being played clean through on goal, the Colombian forward blazed his effort over the crossbar, ensuring the contest would be settled by penalties. Colombia ultimately finished with the better attacking numbers, registering 1.03 xG compared to Switzerland’s 0.35, but were unable to turn their chances into a winning goal.
Quintero and Granit Xhaka converted the opening penalties before Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar to hand Switzerland the early advantage. Although Akanji fired his spot-kick over to offer Colombia a lifeline, Kobel produced the decisive save by diving to his right to deny Hernandez. Luis Diaz converted Colombia’s final penalty to keep their hopes alive, but Vargas kept his composure to tuck Switzerland’s fifth spot-kick into the bottom corner and seal a 4-3 shootout victory.
The defeat extended Colombia’s penalty shootout heartbreak in the FIFA World Cup 2026, having also been eliminated from the Round of 16 by England on penalties in 2018. Switzerland, meanwhile, march into the last eight for the first time in 72 years, where they will face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City as they continue their remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign.
