Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan Claims Team Was 'Cheated' After Argentina's Dramatic World Cup Comeback
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan launched a furious attack on the officials after his side’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
Hassan claimed Egypt were “cheated” after a goal was disallowed by VAR and a late penalty appeal was ignored before Enzo Fernández’s stoppage-time winner. Egypt had led 2-0 before Argentina mounted a stunning comeback through Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Fernández. Hassan questioned the refereeing decisions, suggesting Argentina benefited from crucial calls and even hinted that officials wanted Messi to remain in the tournament.
He also criticized the midday kick-off schedule, calling it unfair for players. Despite the defeat, Egypt impressed with one of the tournament’s strongest performances.
