India Suffer 1-3 Defeat to Netherlands, Semi-Final Hopes Hang by a Thread

India’s men’s hockey team suffered a 1-3 defeat against co-hosts Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, leaving their semi-final hopes in serious jeopardy.

The match remained goalless for more than two quarters before Duco Telgenkamp broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Tjep Hoedemakers doubled the Netherlands’ lead in the 51st minute before captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1.

However, Thijs van Dam struck four minutes later to restore the Dutch side’s two-goal cushion. The Netherlands moved to six points at the top of Pool E, while India remain without a point. India now face Argentina and must win while depending on other results to stay alive.
