Harry Brook’s explosive 135 off 101 balls went in vain as New Zealand defeated England by four wickets in the first ODI at Bay Oval on Sunday.
England collapsed to 10-4 after Zakary Foulkes’ fiery spell, but Brook’s counterattack lifted them to 223 in 35.2 overs.
Chasing 224, New Zealand were in trouble at 66-4 with Brydon Carse taking three early wickets. However, Daryl Mitchell (78*) and Michael Bracewell (51) steadied the chase with a 92-run stand, guiding the hosts home with 13.2 overs to spare. Foulkes starred with 4-41, while Carse returned 3-45 for England.
