India’s run at the FIDE World Cup 2025 ended on Wednesday as GM Arjun Erigaisi lost to China’s GM Wei Yi in the quarterfinal tiebreak.
After drawing both classical games, Arjun survived a difficult position in the first rapid game to force a draw. But in the second, he failed to crack Wei’s Petrov Defence and the Chinese GM secured a winning edge by move 28. Despite Arjun’s resistance, Wei converted after 79 moves, promoting his c-pawn to seal victory. Andrey Esipenko and Javokhir Sindarov also advanced to the semifinals, with Esipenko set to face Wei Yi next.
