Leylah Fernandez stunned fifth seed and French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4 to reach the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. The victory ended Fernandez’s seven-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents and marked her first such win in more than a year.
The 30th-ranked Canadian matched her best result at the tournament and will next face former US Open champion Naomi Osaka, who defeated Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-4. Fernandez controlled the match with consistency and patience, capitalising on Andreeva’s 34 unforced errors.
The Canadian previously defeated Jessica Pegula on her way to winning last year’s Mubadala DC Open.
