Alex Michelsen produced a major upset at the 2026 US Open, defeating No. 16 seed Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows.
The World No. 46 controlled their first meeting with aggressive baseline play and converted key opportunities against his fellow American. Nakashima made a quick start, breaking Michelsen for a 2-0 lead, but the 22-year-old soon found his rhythm and won the opening set. Michelsen broke in the eighth game of the second set before serving it out at love. He maintained his pressure in the third set to complete victory without facing a major scare.
The result marks another impressive US Open run for Michelsen, who is now into the tournament’s third round.
