Mikel Oyarzabal’s Brace Powers Spain Past Austria into FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Spain produced a commanding display to brush aside Austria 3-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at Los Angeles Stadium, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice and Pedro Porro netting his maiden international goal as the European champions booked their place in the Round of 16.

Spain came flying out of the blocks, with Alex Baena releasing Lamine Yamal down the left. The Barcelona winger burst towards goal, only to be denied by Alexander Schlager. Yamal was a constant menace throughout the opening half, especially against Kevin Danso.

La Roja thought they had broken the deadlock through Marc Cucurella, but the goal was ruled out after Pau Cubarsi was adjudged to have fouled Schlager in the build-up. Oyarzabal then tested the Austrian goalkeeper before finally opening the scoring in the 36th minute, turning home Cucurella’s inviting cross from close range. The strike continued the striker’s incredible form, taking him to 16 goals in his last 16 appearances for Spain.

Spain nearly doubled their advantage before the break when Baena’s stunning 25-yard free-kick crashed against the woodwork, while Schlager produced another superb save to deny Yamal at the back post.

The European champions continued to dominate after the restart, creating chances with ease while Austria worked hard to regain possession. However, Austria’s biggest issue remained their lack of pace in attack, as they struggled to threaten Spain’s well-organised defence despite winning the ball back in promising areas.

Spain eventually doubled their lead through Porro, who scored his first international goal. Cucurella won possession before finding Baena on the left, and the winger’s cutback was met by the arriving full-back, who headed past Schlager to make it 2-0 and leave Austria with a mountain to climb.

Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled proceedings with and without the ball, producing a complete performance at both ends of the pitch. They also remained on course to become the first European nation since Switzerland in 2006 to keep clean sheets in each of their opening four World Cup matches.

Spain capped off a dominant evening late on when Cucurella grabbed his second assist of the match, sliding a low pass into the box for Oyarzabal to calmly slot into the bottom-right corner. The brace took the forward to 17 goals in his last 16 Spain appearances and his fourth goal of the tournament, keeping him firmly in the race for the Golden Boot.

Spain proved too strong for Austria over the 90 minutes, controlling possession, creating the better chances and remaining solid defensively throughout. Austria struggled to find a way back into the contest as Spain maintained their intensity until the final whistle, sealing a convincing 3-0 victory and progressing to the Round of 16.
