Sachin Tendulkar, Yorkshire and the Unsung Hero Behind History

In 1992, Sachin Tendulkar made history as Yorkshire’s first overseas professional, breaking a tradition that had lasted for more than a century. The county had previously selected only players born in Yorkshire, even as rival clubs embraced international stars.

Yorkshire initially considered Dean Jones before captain Martyn Moxon chose Australian fast bowler Craig McDermott. When McDermott withdrew through injury, the county urgently needed a replacement.

That was when Bradford League veteran and Dewsbury businessman Suleman ‘Solly’ Adam stepped in. Having recently signed Vinod Kambli for Spen Victoria, Adam suggested Kambli’s 19-year-old schoolmate, Tendulkar, who was already an international star with three Test centuries.

Tendulkar initially declined while touring Australia. Adam then approached Sunil Gavaskar, whose county experience with Somerset carried enormous influence. After speaking to Gavaskar, Tendulkar called Adam and agreed to join Yorkshire.

The contract was signed in Bombay while Tendulkar was playing a match. At just 19, he became the first non-Yorkshire-born cricketer to represent the county.

Tendulkar went on to score 1,671 runs in 35 matches across all competitions, including more than 1,000 Championship runs. His Championship century came against Durham.

But there is another remarkable part of the story. Instead of staying in Yorkshire-arranged accommodation, Tendulkar lived with the Adam family, finding a genuine home away from home.

Adam, who had migrated from Karachi to England in 1963, spent decades connecting South Asian cricketers with English league clubs. Players including Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Abdul Qadir, Vinod Kambli and VVS Laxman benefited from his network.

Sachin’s Yorkshire story is rightly celebrated. But behind that historic breakthrough stood Solly Adam—the unsung bridge between Indian talent and English cricket.
