Brendon McCullum has apologised after being removed as England’s Test coach, admitting the team’s poor results in major series ultimately cost him the role.
Speaking ahead of England’s ODI series against India, McCullum said he respected the ECB’s decision, acknowledging that seven defeats in the last nine Tests were “not good enough.” The former New Zealand captain expressed regret over England’s failures against Australia and India but said it was time for a new coach to take charge. McCullum, who remains England’s white-ball coach, also described it as “romantic” that his Test coaching tenure ended alongside Ben Stokes’ international retirement.
England are now expected to appoint a new red-ball coach ahead of the next Test cycle.
