Day one of the Australian Open 2026 entered the history books as France’s Elsa Jacquemot edged past World No.20 Marta Kostyuk in an epic three-hour, 31-minute first-round clash at Melbourne Park.
Jacquemot prevailed 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(10-7), becoming the first women’s singles match at the tournament to feature tiebreaks in all three sets since final-set tiebreaks were introduced in 2019.
The 22-year-old saved a match point, overcame a tense injury delay, and sealed her first top-20 win and maiden Australian Open main-draw victory in front of a record day-session crowd.
