Switzerland Beat Canada 2-1 to Finish Top of Group B at FIFA World Cup 2026

Switzerland clinched top spot in Group B at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after overcoming Canada 2-1 in a high-stakes encounter between two sides that entered the match level on 5 points. With first place in the group and a favorable path to the knockout stages on the line, the Swiss produced a composed second-half display to secure victory and finish the group phase unbeaten.

The contest lived up to its billing from the outset, with both teams battling fiercely in midfield and competing for every ball. The opening 45 minutes were marked by physical duels, disciplined defending, and high intensity, as neither side was able to create the breakthrough before halftime.

Switzerland wasted little time making their move after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, Ruben Vargas opened the scoring, finishing a well-worked attacking move after being played through by Manzambi to give the Swiss a crucial lead.

The momentum remained with Switzerland, and they doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. This time, provider turned goalscorer as Manzambi found the back of the net after excellent assist from Embolo, putting the Swiss firmly in control of the contest.

Canada refused to go quietly and mounted a response in the closing stages. In the 76th minute, Promise David finished confidently after being set up by N. Saliba, reducing the deficit and setting up a tense final quarter-hour.

The Canadians pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Switzerland remained organized defensively and successfully saw out the remainder of the match to claim all three points.

The victory sees Switzerland finish atop Group B with seven points, underlining their consistency throughout the group stage. Canada, meanwhile, also advanced to the knockout rounds after securing second place, capping off an impressive campaign that included the nation’s progression beyond the group stage.
