Paraguay Beat Germany on Penalties to Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16
Paraguay celebrated one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating four-time champions Germany 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw to reach the Round of 16.
Head coach Gustavo Alfaro praised his squad, calling them “26 warriors” who became “legends” after the historic victory. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who saved two penalties and won Player of the Match, revealed his performance was the result of detailed preparation and analysis of Germany’s players. Goalscorer Julio Enciso said Paraguay respected Germany’s quality but never feared them.
The victory marked Paraguay’s first-ever World Cup knockout win and ended Germany’s perfect record in penalty shootouts.
