Mukesh Kumar has emerged as a strong contender for India’s Test squad for the upcoming New Zealand series following his impressive performance in the Irani Cup. The Bengal pacer claimed eight wickets as Rest of India defeated Mumbai by 167 runs in Srinagar on October 4. Fellow Bengal seamer Akash Deep, who took six wickets, is also in contention after being identified as an important option for the New Zealand conditions.
The selectors are expected to consider both pacers alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Gurnoor Brar for the two-Test series, part of the World Test Championship cycle. Prasidh Krishna could also feature if he recovers from his recent hamstring injury and receives clearance from the Centre of Excellence.
Meanwhile, Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has ended, with Pragyan Ojha temporarily leading the four-member selection committee. The committee is expected to meet next week to finalise India’s squads for the New Zealand tour.
