Matt Renshaw’s 190 Puts Australia in Command Against South Africa

Matt Renshaw’s 82 and Maiden Test Wicket Put Australia on Brink of Victory

Matt Renshaw scored a career-best 190 to guide Australia to 390 all out on the second day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead on Saturday.

South Africa were 27/1 at stumps after Josh Hazlewood struck early. Resuming on 46 not out, Renshaw batted for 468 minutes, facing 397 balls and hitting 21 fours and a six. He added 203 runs to Australia’s overnight total of 187/6, sharing an 86-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins and a record 134-run stand with Nathan Lyon for the ninth wicket against South Africa in Tests.

Lyon contributed 27 as Renshaw anchored Australia’s innings with a composed and disciplined display. Australia strengthened their position when Hazlewood dismissed Ryan Rickelton at third slip in the second over of South Africa’s reply, leaving the hosts without a run on the board.

Aiden Markram (15 not out) and David Bedingham (12 not out) steadied the innings, taking South Africa to 27/1 before bad light brought play to an end. Renshaw’s previous Test century was 184 against Pakistan in Sydney during the 2016-17 season.

After two lengthy spells out of the Test side, he returned for Australia’s previous Test against Bangladesh in August.
