Egypt Beat Australia on Penalties to Reach Historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16
Egypt scripted history by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw to secure their first-ever knockout victory at the FIFA World Cup.
Emam Ashour gave the Pharaohs an early lead with a header in the 13th minute, but Mohamed Hany’s unfortunate own goal in the second half forced the match into penalties. Egypt converted all four spot-kicks, with Mohamed Salah producing a classy Panenka, while Australia missed twice through Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington.
The historic win sends the unbeaten Egyptians into the Round of 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cabo Verde in Atlanta on July 8.
