Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, extending his remarkable record by scoring in eight consecutive World Cup matches. Cabo Verde twice fought back to level the contest, forcing extra time with a determined display. Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina’s lead in extra time before the holders held firm against relentless late pressure. Goalkeeper Vozinha produced several outstanding saves despite the defeat.

Argentina will now face Egypt in the Round of 16 as they continue their title defence.
