Hugo Broos criticised a key refereeing decision after South Africa lost 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
South Africa finished the game with nine men after red cards to Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane. While accepting the first dismissal, Broos argued that the second red card was harsh and claimed the Mexican player had committed the foul. The Belgian coach also insisted his side matched Mexico after the opening 20 minutes but admitted costly defensive errors proved decisive.
South Africa will now focus on regrouping ahead of their remaining group-stage matches.
