Travis Head’s 87 Rescues Australia After Collapse Against South Africa
Travis Head scored an unbeaten 87 to revive Australia’s hopes after they were bowled out for 99 and forced to follow on against South Africa on Day 4 of the second Test in Gqeberha on Wednesday.
Australia reached 156/4 at stumps in their second innings, still trailing by 170 runs. Head and Marnus Labuschagne added 92 runs for the second wicket after Kagiso Rabada dismissed opener Nic Maddinson for eight. Labuschagne scored 39 before Simon Harmer removed him, while Rabada struck again to dismiss Matt Renshaw.
Harmer then trapped Beau Webster leg-before. Earlier, Australia’s first innings collapsed under relentless pressure from South Africa’s pace attack. Marco Jansen claimed five wickets for 33 runs, dismantling the visitors’ batting order. Wiaan Mulder dismissed Steve Smith for 28, despite the veteran reaching 11,000 Test runs during his innings.
Australia’s total of 99 gave South Africa a massive 326-run first-innings lead, prompting the hosts to enforce the follow-on. Head’s resistance kept Australia fighting, but the visitors remained in a difficult position heading into the final day.
