Joe Root Reappointed England Captain as Ben Stokes Misses New Zealand Test
England have turned to veteran batter Joe Root as captain for the second Test against New Zealand after regular skipper Ben Stokes was ruled out amid an ongoing investigation into an off-field nightclub incident.
Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have both been omitted from the squad after allegedly breaching the team’s midnight curfew. Despite vice-captain Harry Brook being available, selectors opted for the experienced Root, who captained England in a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022.
England have also recalled Jofra Archer and added Jordan Cox as they look to secure the series after their opening Test victory at Lord’s.
