Harmanpreet Singh Brace Helps India Beat Wales 3-1 in Hockey World Cup Opener
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice from penalty corners as India began their FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 3-1 win over Wales in their Pool D opener in Amstelveen.
Sanjay Rana opened the scoring in the ninth minute before Harmanpreet doubled India’s advantage with a trademark drag-flick. The Indian skipper struck again in the third quarter to make it 3-0 and put India firmly in control. Wales managed a consolation goal in the final quarter after a video referral confirmed the effort.
Indian goalkeepers Suraj Karkera and Mohith HS made crucial saves as Wales threatened at various stages. India controlled possession and defended effectively to secure three points. India will next face England on Monday before meeting Pakistan on August 19.
