Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of India’s women’s cricket team across all three international formats. The 37-year-old announced her decision in an Instagram post, saying she was leaving the team in a “good place” and was ready to “play for the love of the game again.”
Harmanpreet led India to their maiden women’s ODI World Cup title last year and most recently guided the team to a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal. During her captaincy, she represented India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is.
Her decision came a day after she, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar met BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati to discuss the team’s future roadmap.
Smriti Mandhana is widely regarded as the leading candidate to succeed Harmanpreet. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Harmanpreet is expected to continue playing and lead Mumbai Indians in the upcoming WPL season.
