England tightened their grip on the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s after Gus Atkinson claimed two late wickets on Day 2.
Chasing 254 for victory, New Zealand slumped to 36/3 at stumps, still needing 218 runs. Atkinson removed captain Tom Latham for a duck and later bowled nightwatchman Will O’Rourke, while Josh Tongue dismissed Kane Williamson for 18. Earlier, debutant Emilio Gay top-scored with 57 and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith added 39 as England were bowled out for 226 in their second innings.
Nathan Smith starred for New Zealand with impressive figures of 6/70. England’s advantage was built on Ollie Robinson’s first-innings five-wicket haul, which helped dismiss the visitors for just 113 and establish a commanding lead.
