Diana Shnaider Upsets Aryna Sabalenka to Reach First French Open Semifinal
Russian rising star Diana Shnaider produced one of the biggest upsets of the French Open 2026 by defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the women’s singles quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
The 22-year-old, seeded 25th, battled back from a set and a double-break deficit to secure her maiden Grand Slam semifinal berth. Sabalenka appeared in complete control when she led 6-3, 4-1 and later served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. However, Shnaider showcased remarkable composure, winning 12 of the next 13 games and closing the match with 10 consecutive games.
The victory ended Sabalenka’s streak of six straight Grand Slam semifinals and marked Shnaider’s first win over a reigning World No. 1 player.
