Canadian Open: Ekaterina Alexandrova Stuns World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka

Ekaterina Alexandrova produced a major upset at the Canadian Open, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 in a thrilling two-hour, 29-minute battle.

The 19th-ranked Russian secured her third career victory over a world No. 1, having previously beaten Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka. The win also earned Alexandrova her sixth WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance and first since Doha 2025. Sabalenka fought back after losing the opening set but could not complete the comeback, falling after Alexandrova saved two match points before converting her third opportunity at 5-4 in the decider.

Elsewhere, Elina Svitolina defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4, while Diana Shnaider upset two-time champion Jessica Pegula. Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff remain the only Top 5 seeds left.
