Rain Washout Ends Ireland’s Direct Qualification Hopes For 2027 ODI World Cup

Ireland’s hopes of securing direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup ended after the first ODI against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss due to rain in Bready.

Ireland needed a 5-0 series sweep over Afghanistan and favorable results elsewhere to earn automatic qualification. The washout made that impossible, forcing them into the 10-team World Cup Qualifier.

The Qualifier winner will advance directly to the 2027 World Cup, while the second, third and fourth-placed teams will compete in the Super Series for another spot. Ireland also missed qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup after falling in the Qualifier.
